If you follow my blog, you must have noticed that I've been going to a very 'micro' phase... :) I've been making several microminis. And those who can see them in person often ask me things like: "how on earth do you make those tiny things, they are so small!!!" or "wow, you must have very steady hands!" or even "my hand is too big to work this size!..."

Well, actually it's more a matter of proper technique and tools: high quality fine point tweezers, tacky glue, one side blade, magnifying lens and... toothpicks!!! :) Yes, that's correct: it's one of the best tools ever created, lol... I've already made micro (1:144) furniture from scratch. Anna-Carin generously shares some tutorials on smaller scales. But most of what I do in this scale come from kits. I really like the ones by Susan Karatjas - from SDK. The parts are laser-cut - which is way more accurate than cutting them with a craft or x-acto knife - and they are cut from wood sometimes as thin as paper. Today I'll show you a photo-sequence of me putting one of those kits together: a coffee table. It IS a delicate work, one which demands lightness on your hands, gentle movements, a generous dose of patience and the help of excellent magnifying lenses. But even someone with big hands like me can do it! ;)

So, enjoy and I hope this will inspire you too!

IMPORTANT NOTICE: the following pictures were taken with the camera set on "MACRO". Objects seem BIGGER than they actually are!!! :)

Remove pieces from backing by gently cutting the tabs (from the back side) using a razor blade. Place them on double sided tape to work or stain.

Apply some glue on the center of the table, on the back side. Use this kind of applicator or a toothpick.

With the help of tweezers, center and glue the spacer to the bottom of the table.

Aplique cola na lateral onde virão as "pernas" Isso na foto é MUITA cola!!! Use menos...
Apply some glue to the side where the "legs" will come. This is TOO much glue. Use less...

Position one of the sides/legs with the help of tweezers.

Coax into an upright position with help of a toothpick.

Make sure it's flush with the spacer using something straight.

Cole a outra lateral (perna) do mesmo modo.
Glue the other side the same way.

Use the reazor blade to gently remove from double-sided tape.

Se for pintar, pinte a parte de baixo primeiro. Deixe na fita dupla-face para isso.
If you are painting, keep it on the double-sided tape. Paint back/bottom side first.

Here is the coffee table finished. See how small it is, compared to my index finger?

I applied a thin line of golden paint and then triple thick varnish, to look like lacquered

Duas versões da mesma mesa.
Two finished versions of the same table.
DICAS IMPORTANTES:

IMPORTANT TIPS:
  • When removing from backing, place your finger on the part you are removing to keep from loosing it. They tend to "fly away" and get lost very easily! Remove only the parts you're going to use immediately, so as not to lose or break them. They are VERY small and fragile!
  • ALWAYS let parts dry WELL before moving to the next step. If you rush, you'll ruin your work and will have to start all over again! And trust me, you don't want that extra layer of dry glue on your delicate work! Also wait paint dry WELL before moving parts! Just step away and go do something else! :)

Dia das mães - Mother's Day

My mom, as usual, declared weeks ago she didn't want anything for Mother's Day. She usually does that (on any occasion, birthday, Christmas...), but I know her well enough to know that she would like it if she got something special...

To be honest, I've been planning on making this gift since last year. I got a set of nativity figures from Marie, an American friend (from Marie's Minis). They arrived here almost in March, so I thought they'd make a nice present for Mother's Day (which is today, here in Brazil).

E as figuras, claro!
So "all" I had to do was a nice scene to place the figures. I made it all from scratch (except for the Pine tree, which is ready-made, used for model buildings). I made the structure based on the figures size. I guess it's something around 1:75.

When I gave it to her, I said: "Mom, do you know who else is a mother? Our Lady, mother of Jesus. And as a memento of the day She became a mom, I made Her a little 'tribute'. And as you are very devoted to Her, you'll be in charge of taking good care of it, for life..." :)

Ela bem que gostou... ;)

Yes, she liked it!... ;)
